Know Your Customer checks protect you and the wider financial system from fraud and financial crime.
1. Purpose
Bells Technologies Limited operates a Know Your Customer (KYC) programme aligned with the Central Bank of Nigeria's customer due diligence expectations and the requirements of our licensed payment partners. The programme ensures we know who is using Bellspay, can detect misuse, and can respond to lawful requests from regulators and law enforcement.
2. Who must be verified
Every Bellspay account holder must be at least 18 years old and resident in Nigeria. Accounts may only be opened and operated by the individual named on them. Opening or operating a wallet on behalf of an undisclosed third party is prohibited.
3. Information we collect
- At sign-up: full name, email address, phone number and a password.
- For higher limits: date of birth, residential address, Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identity Number (NIN).
- Where required: a government-issued photo ID and a selfie or liveness check.
- Automatically: device, IP address and transaction behaviour used for fraud screening.
4. Verification tiers
| Tier | Requirements | Typical access |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Verified email and phone number | Wallet funding and low-value bill payments |
| Tier 2 | Tier 1 plus BVN/NIN and date of birth | Higher daily spend and bank transfers |
| Tier 3 | Tier 2 plus photo ID, address and liveness check | Highest daily and per-transaction limits |
Applicable daily spend, transfer and velocity limits are enforced in-app and displayed before you confirm a transaction. Limits may be reduced at any time where risk indicators are present.
5. Ongoing due diligence
Verification is not a one-off event. We monitor transactions on an ongoing basis and may request refreshed or additional documentation where activity is inconsistent with the profile on file, where a document expires, or where a partner or regulator requires it.
6. Failure or refusal to verify
If we cannot verify your identity, or if information provided is false or incomplete, we may restrict features, decline transactions, freeze the wallet pending review, or close the account. Where an account is closed, any legitimate remaining balance is returned to a bank account in the verified customer's own name, subject to legal restrictions.
7. Handling of KYC data
Identity data is used only for verification, fraud prevention, and legal or regulatory compliance. It is shared solely with the licensed partners and verification providers needed to complete those checks, or with authorities where the law requires. Records are retained for the period mandated by Nigerian financial regulations after the account relationship ends. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
